Old Stone Herbalism

herbal consultations, classes, and events

about me

My name is Emily. I live in Vermont and one of my greatest joys is wandering through our forests, meadows, roadsides and marshes, meeting and getting to know the plants around us. I formally studied plant medicine at the Vermont Center for Integrative Herbalism, completing their Clinical Herbalist training program. I believe that being in relationship with plants is healing to both our bodies and spirits -- it's a part of humanity as old as time.

consultations

What do consultations look like?
Initial consultations are a conversation in which I listen to your story and goals, ask questions about your health experiences and lifestyle, and discuss what kinds of strategies would work best for you. Following our appointment, I will create herbal formulas tailored to you and may offer nutritional or other advice.
Before initial appointments, I ask that clients fill out comprehensive intake and consent forms that are sent via email.Follow up appointments allow existing clients to check in on progress, address new health concerns, and adjust formulas accordingly.Working with plants is often a slow process, requiring patience and consistency. This is especially true when facing longstanding patterns of dysfunction. In many cases, herbs alone will not completely resolve an issue, unless contributing factors in one's lifestyle and environment are also addressed. I strive to set realistic expectations with clients about the role herbs could play for them. My services are not meant to replace medical care, and I may refer you to another practitioner if I determine your needs are beyond my scope of training. At this time, initial consultations are available in-person only, in and around my home base of Shelburne, VT. Follow up appointments may be in-person or via phone.Pricing:
Initial appointment (90 minutes): $100
Follow up (45 minutes): $40
(does not include cost of herbs)
Herbs are primarily sourced from Heart Hand Land, a Vermont based apothecary who can ship your formulas directly to you. Formula prices vary, but I will do my best to work within your budget. If appointment costs are a barrier to you, please reach out, as I have some capacity for sliding scale and trade. To learn more or schedule an appointment, please reach out.Practice PhilosophyI believe feeling a sense of community—with people, plants, and the greater biosphere around us—bolsters our innate capacity to heal. My goal as a practitioner is both to act as a matchmaker, bringing you into relationship with plants who can support you, as well as someone who can listen deeply to your story. We live in a profoundly sick culture that is thick with disconnection and exploitation, both of people and of the land. I recognize that many of the factors affecting one’s health are far beyond their control, and broad cultural change is essential for the wellbeing of all. There is no shame in feeling unwell. While I use plants from all over the world, I am particularly excited about working with the plants found here in Vermont. I love knowing how to find medicine, for free, right outside—and I love teaching others to do the same. For clients who are interested, I am happy to prioritize local plants in their formulas and provide information on how to harvest and prepare them.TrainingI studied plant medicine at the Vermont Center for Integrative Herbalism for four years, completing their Clinical Herbalist training program and working as a clinical intern under supervision in my final year. My curriculum blended traditional energetic understandings of medicine, nutrition and disease with modern knowledge of physiology and phytochemistry. It was underpinned by a strong focus on social and health justice. I am trained to evaluate the safety risks of herb/drug interactions and am happy to work with clients using a blend of conventional and holistic therapies.
